The Liberty have made it clear from the get-go that they’re not satisfied with one title. 

They want multiple. 

It’s why after the team received their championship rings in the season opener, the team vowed to leave those memories in the past.

The goal may remain the same, but this is a new season, with different challenges. 

Three weeks into the season, though, the Liberty have passed each test with flying colors. 

The latest example came Tuesday when New York tormented the lowly Chicago Sky from start to finish. 

Even without Jonquel Jones (right ankle sprain), the Liberty made it look easy in their 85-66 win at Barclays Center. 

Sabrina Ionescu scored a game-high 23 points and had seven assists and Breanna Stewart added 18 points and six rebounds as the defending champions extended their best start in franchise history to 9-0. 

It’s hard to find glaring issues with this Liberty team. Even when they’re outrebounded, they’re finding ways to win. 

“It’s a credit to the players just how focused they are to come in and that we can push them because we want to have greatness,” coach Sandy Brondello said. “We want to be the best. And to do that, you have to come to work and these players do that and so lucky, it makes my job and the coaches job easy because the kind of players that we have.” 

The Sky never really stood a chance. 

They’ve been out of sorts all season and have the second-worst offense and defense in the league. 

To add insult to injury, Tuesday was the Sky’s first full game without Courtney Vandersloot, who suffered a season-ending anterior cruciate ligament tear in Saturday’s loss to the Indiana Fever. 

The Liberty are too experienced, too talented and too deep for a team like Chicago to contain. 

Meanwhile, the Sky aren’t any of that. 

The Liberty opened the game by scoring 12 unanswered points. It was the start of what would be a long night for the Sky. 

The Liberty’s offense carved up the Sky’s defense. Finding open lanes for easy layups and knocking in eight shots from behind the arc. 

Angel Reese scored a season-high 17 points and had 11 rebounds. But outside of her, the Sky had no answers for the Liberty’s dominance. 

Chicago did win the battle of the boards in the first half, outrebounding the Liberty 21-12. But that didn’t really matter because New York had a 20-point advantage at the break. 

The Liberty’s lead ballooned to as many as 34 points. 

But what impressed Stewart the most was the team’s defensive effort. 

“There was a few small lapses where it was a breakdown and [the Sky] got an open look,” Stewart said. “But I felt like our hands were in the passing lane a lot. There’s a lot of deflections, there’s a lot of tips and that can lead into steals. And especially with their two bigs, we know they’re a paint-dominant team, so making sure that we give them tough, contested shots and get ready to rebound.” 

Tuesday was the third time the Liberty held an opponent to fewer than 70 points. It also was the first time this season New York has won by at least 19. 

Brondello said the Liberty’s hot start can be attributed to the team’s attention to detail. 

“We’re very intentional with how we want to play,” Brondello said. “And when we get away from it, we’re quick to get back to it. And it starts on the defensive end. For the most part, I thought we had a physical presence. We were being disruptive. We’ve got a lot more deflections and when we have high deflections, we usually do quite well. 

“Everyone that comes off [the bench], we’re a threat, and that’s what we need as we move forward.” 

The Liberty will have some time before hitting the road for a nationally televised game at Indiana on Saturday.
