The Rock will finally come back to a WWE ring – and he will do so in one of the biggest tag matches in company history
Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson will take part in his first true WWE match in 11 years – since he lost to John Cena in the main event of WrestleMania 29 – when he teams with cousin Roman Reigns against Seth Rollins and Cody Rhodes in the Saturday main event of a two-day WrestleMania 40 from Lincoln Financial Field.
If the Rock’s team wins, it’s Bloodline Rules in Sunday’s main event when Rhodes tries to take Reigns’ Undisputed WWE Universal championship and end his 1,300-plus day reign will be anything goes. If Rhodes and Rollins win, then Reigns’ The Bloodline faction will be banned from ringside.
The tag match is the feature attraction of a loaded Night 1 card that includes, Rhea Ripley, Becky Lynch, Gunther, Rey Mysterio and Jade Cargill’s first true WWE match.

Starting WrestleMania at 7 p.m. is such a good idea. You won't lose the crowd
72,543 is the WWE-enhanced announced crowd for Night 1.
Here we go folks!
Cody is out first and the Cody-vader is back. Plenty of pyro and a hug to mama Rhodes in the front row. He gave his weight belt to his father-in-law, who Michael Cole said got through chemotherapy and radiation treatment to be here in Philly.
Rollins did not wear an outfit mocking The Rock. Long leopard-print robe.
The Rock just walked out into a flaming Brahma Bull symbol on the stage holding the People's Championship given to him by Muhammad Ali's widow Lonnie last night at the Hall Fame. Might be the entrance of the night along with Jade, Naomi and Bianca Beliar.
The 12-week training camp paid off. Rock looks slimmed down and ready to wrestle.
Just Roman Reigns and Paul Heyman. It's his eighth WrestleMania main event.
Samantha Irvin is absolutely crushing these intros!
The Rock is in the ring for the first time tonight across from Seth Rollins.
After a pretty even exchange, Rock tells Rhodes to "just bring it" with a hand gesture and they are now in the ring together.
Rhodes and Rollins isolate the Rock in the corner and have the upper hand even as Reigns gets involved. They split up with Rollins taking Rock and Rhodes taking Reigns. The Rock told the ref if he counts them out he is fired!
The Rock -- who used a trash can -- and Rollins are fighting in the crowd while Rhodes and Reigns are on the ramp.
After the Rock held back the referee, he and Reigns gain the upper hand. The Rock is going right after the knee of Rollins. This match really needed the heel to get the advantage after a very babyface-heavy first act.
Heavy boos for the Tribal Chief and The Final Boss as they isolate Rollins, who might not be in great shape to face Drew McIntyre tomorrow.
Rollins finally appears to get free for a tag, but Reigns pulls Rhodes down from the corner.
The Rock has Rollins in the sharpshooter. Cody slaps Rock in the face and Rollins eventually makes the tag.
Rhodes with a Disaster Kick and Cody Cutter to Reigns, but the Tribal Chief kicks out.
Cody Cutter! A Rollins splash! Roman kicks out!
Roman Reigns takes a beating. Stereo super kicks, a Stomp and a Cross Rhodes, but The Rock pulls Rhodes off.
Reigns delivered a low blow and a spear, but Cody kicked out.
Reigns puts Rhodes in the guillotine choke, but a Rollins stomp breaks up.
The Rock is taunted Rhodes's mom with the weight belt and she gives it right back to him.
Cody Rhodes counters a People's Elbow with a Cody Cutter and he is whipping The Rock with it.
Rollins pulls Rhodes out of the way of a Reigns spear and it hits the Rock instead. Double Pedigrees! Rock and Roman Reigns both kick out.
The Rock taunts Rhodes' mom again a puts him on the announce table. Rollins saves him and Rhodes gives Rock a Rock Bottom through the other table. A spear from Reigns to Rollins through the barricade.
These dudes are giving us everything!
Rhodes goes for the triple Cross Rhodes, but Rock breaks up by hitting him with the weight belt and tags in.
Rock Bottom. People's Elbow. 1-2-3. The Rock pins Cody Rhodes and it's Bloodline Rules tomorrow night.
Before Sami Zayn goes out they show him backstage with is wife and kid. They tell him he can do it and tonight’s the night. Then Chad Gable greets him and sends him out on his own. Gable says he owes him a favor.
Kevin Owens then meets Zayn right before he goes out and hypes him up. This feels like Gunther may go down tonight. Wow.
Guther is chopping the heck out of Sami Zayn, but Zayn keeps fighting back and holding his own until a DDT final drops the champion.
Gunther with a splash and a power bomb, but Zayn is powering up!
Zayn with a brian buster to Gunther. Helluva kick! Helluva Kick! Sami does it! He ends Gunther's historic Intercontinental champion reign!
Crowd loved it here. Match was so well put together and adding Sami Zayn's family was a great touch. I know this is an all-time Reign he is ending, but Zayn has been the Intercontinental champion before. Maybe he drops it to Chad Gable next. But go make someone by having them beat Gunther.
Give me a Gable heel turn and Gunther as Cody's first title defense and we are good!
Jade, Naomi and Beliar get a showstopping X-Men themed entrance as they are raised up and then lowered on a platform on the side of the stage. Jade dressed as Storm, Beliar as Cyclops. I'm not sure who Naomi was -- she looked more like Raiden than an X-Men character but I just might be blanking.
It feels like 46 in Philly right now for the record.
Naomi and Belair took turns beating up Damage CTRL, the latter taking on all three at one point. She dropped Kairi on the others and then did a standing, springboard moonsault off the ropes on to all three.
We want Jade chants have started. And here she is!
Cargill looks impressive fending off Damage CTRL one at a time until the numbers game catches up to her.
Belair comes to her rescue and hits Asuka with a KOD. Cargill then delivers a Jaded to Dakota Kai into her signature pin for the 1-2-3 and the win.
The three winners share a big hug in the ring.
That was solid business. Great showcase for Cargill as the babyfaces looked fantastic, but Damage CTRL feels like a very less-then version of what it used to be after that.
The Mysterio tag team match is up next. Does Carlito or Andrade turn on Rey tonight?
Two large men in Rey Mysterio masks show up to help out Rey and Andrade. One of them is former Eagles center Jason Kelce and the other is the Eagles's Lane Johnson.
Kelce threw Dominik Mysterio into the ring post.
Lane Johnson and Jason Kelce helped Rey Mysterio (dressed in Eagles-themed gear) win at WrestleMania 40!
Match 2: Awesome Truth vs. The Judgment Day (c) vs. DIY vs. The New Day vs. New Catch Republic vs. A-Town Down Under in a ladder match for the Undisputed WWE Tag Team Championships
Kofi Kingston and Xavier Woods sporting Apollo Creed and Rocky inspired geat. Damian Priest and Finn Balor sporting some creeping makes. Priest carrying the MITB briefcase with him.
I have high expectations for this one.
All of the teams immediately try to climb ladders to get the titles.
Tyler Bate lifts up Finn Balor and a ladder for an airplane spin and smashes Kingston in the process.
R-Truth is looking for a tag from The Judgment Day and the crows loves it. He gets it and pulls off the Cena move set. lol He goes for a pin on Balor and counts the 1-2-3. Truth is a national treasure.
Johnny Gargano with an HBK superkick and Tommaso Ciampa with the Triple H pedigree. A-Town Downunder knocks both teams down from the ladders and grabs the SmackDown championship. They are the new SmackDown champs.
The match continues until the Raw championships are brought down.
This is brilliant! WWE is splitting the tag team titles up tonight.
Waller was tossed out of the ring through a ladder by New Catch Republic.
Kingston with a dive to the outside off the ladder. Austin Theory is climbing the ladder, but New Catch Republic pulls him off.
Ciampa with an Air Raid Crash from the top of the ladder and Truth is in the ring. JD McDonagh thwarts his attempt and rolls The Judgement Day in the ring.
McDonagh is pushed off the top of the ladder through the tables on the outside.
Priest with a Razors Edge to Kingston on a chair.
Miz and Priest battle for the Raw belts.
This match is Nuts!
Truth pushes Priest off the ladder and dumps him out of the ring.
R-Truth grabs the Raw tag team champions!! R-Truth did it! The first WrestleMania win of his career.
That was fantastic. WWE finally split the tag team championship back up, which was needed and finished the story around R-Truth and The Judgment Day. Miz and Truth share a hug.
Becky Lynch's entrance includes passages from her new book, which I highly recommend. Great to have "The Man entrance back at WrestleMania. Lynch is in a red, white and black outfit with a long white cape.
Rhea Ripley is getting a live band entrance from Motionless in White and plenty of pyro. A very ornate purple and black attire for Ripley with light purple facepaint around her eye. Star entrance for the Women's World champion.
Rhea with a Riptide! Lynch kicks out! Great story being told here.
Lynch with a Superplex into a Dis-arm-her!!!
Ripley picks her up onto her shoulders. The two flip out of the ring, but Lynch stays on her shoulders before Ripley finally drops her. OH WOW!
Ripley with a frog splash. Lynch kicks.
Commentary said Lynch has 102 fever and strep throat.
Rhea Ripley gives Lynch a Riptide into the turnbuckle, catches her on the bounce back and gives her another Riptide to get the 1-2-3. Mami retains. Heck of an opener to WrestleMania 40.
WWE unveils a new then, now, together, forever open narrated by Triple H and Meek Mill gets us going by narrating the WrestleMania intro video. A big event feel here in Philly. Michael Cole mentions a bunch of celebrities rolling up tonight, so we could get some surprises.
If we were to judge which night of WrestleMania 40 is more stacked, this is the one.
WWE gets things started in Philadelphia in a big way as we get The Rock’s true in-ring return after 11 years and the long undefeated streaks of women’s World champion Rhea Ripley and Intercontinental champion Gunther in jeopardy to credible challengers.
The Post's pro wrestling columnist Joseph Staszewski does his best to predict what will happen on Night 1 of WrestleMania 40.
Cody Rhodes has spent some time becoming the uncrowned People’s Champion, and all signs point to that finally ending this week.
It’s when the youngest son of “The American Dream” Dusty Rhodes is expected to finish his story to win the WWE championship his dad never held.
To do so, he will need to defeat Undisputed WWE Universal champion Roman Reigns in the main event of WrestleMania 40’s second night at Lincoln Financial Field on Sunday.
