Technically, Todd Zeile is the new Ron Coomer. However, after talking to Joe Torre this past weekend, the veteran infielder received the impression he will get more at-bats than Coomer did. And if the Yankees trade Nick Johnson, Zeile will get plenty of stick time.

“I guess it will be a Ron Coomer, Nick Johnson type of role where I play first base, third base and DH,” said Zeile, who officially joined the Yankees yesterday after passing a physical. “Playing time will be determined by performance and how the roster shakes out on April 1.”

The 37-year-old Zeile, who joins his 10th team, will receive a base salary of $1.5 million with incentives that can reach $2.5 million. It’s a cut from the $6 million he earned from the Rockies last year when he batted .273 with 18 homers and 87 RBIs.

However, it reunites him with Torre – for whom Zeile played in St. Louis – it gives him a chance to win a World Series ring and it brings him back to New York.

“Any time you can be part of this franchise, you have to do it,” Zeile said.
