Amazon is planning a cheaper music subscription service that would cost around $5 a month and would only work on its Echo hardware, according to a report.

Amazon wants to launch the service in September but has not finalized deals with major music labels and publishers, tech blog Recode reported, citing sources.

The service would cost about half the $10-a-month going rate that Spotify, Apple Music and others charge. Amazon is also working on an unlimited, ad-free $10 music service that would be in line with rivals, Reuters reported in June.

The lower-priced service would be a new wrinkle in the streaming music wars.

Amazon’s service would offer unlimited on-demand songs like the more expensive options, according to Recode, but would be confined to the Echo, its hands-free, voice-activated speaker.

Pandora, the internet radio service, is also working on a paid music service that would cost around $5 a month. While the plan is to offer more capabilities, such as the ability to skip songs, it would not be a true on-demand service.

Amazon did not comment on the Recode report.
