Amazon no longer has a hang-up on smartphones.

The long-awaited announcement from CEO Jeff Bezos that it will release a smartphone came Friday as the Internet behemoth said it would release the details about its first mobile phone by the end of June and begin shipping phones by the end of September, ahead of the holiday shopping season.

The retailer has been demonstrating the handset to developers in recent weeks, sources said.
