I watched “G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra” over the weekend – barrel of fun! – and every time I saw the nanomite-enhanced soldiers with their face shields on, all I could think of was: “Army of Two.” You’ve gotta admit, there is a certain resemblance.

Anyway, EA Montreal has announced that “Army of Two: The 40th Day” is shipping to stores on Jan. 12, 2010. Interestingly, people in Europe will get it earlier – on Jan. 8.

Plotline for the sequel to the 2008 co-op shooter game is: The ultimate two-man private military team, Salem and Rios, have returned. This time, they’re trapped in the middle of Shanghai while the city is under attack. They’ll have to work together to kill enemies dead and escape the city that’s collapsing around them.

If you pre-order the game now (there are some restrictions), you’ll get exclusive access to the all-new multiplayer mode, ‘Extraction,’ at launch. Those who don’t pre-order will have to wait a month after the game ships before the mode gets unlocked. ‘Extraction,’ for those not in the know, is the redesigned multiplayer mode that pits teams of four against a series of enemy waves. Strategy will be involved.

Army of Two: The 40th Day will be for Xbox 360, PS3 and PSP.
