I promise you – no “Holy —-!” jokes – but this is the Awesome Stuff merch column I’ve been waiting to write for, oh, I don’t know, just about MY ENTIRE LIFE!

Seriously, I love comics. But I also love comics Stuff, hence this column every Friday.

Anyway, like many of you, my earliest superhero memories go back to the Adam West “Batman” TV show. Without hyperbole, that show is directly responsible for me sitting here right now, writing this. But more on that another time.

What I’m gonna say right now is that Mattel is putting out a series of action figures based on the show – part of a massive merchandising effort by DC Entertainment and Warner Brothers and about a billion companies that will kick into full gear a little later this year. Again, more on that another time.

Cutting to the Batchase, I loved my Megos when I was a kid but I would have given just about anything to have had THESE:

Batophiles, these are the first in-hand pics out there of the first wave of figures – Batman, the Penguin and the Riddler – by any fan or fansite, thanks to the fine folks at Mattel.

The figs will start hitting stores sometime in the next four to six weeks, it appears, and will go for anywhere from about $16 to $22 each, depending on where you get them or which website you go to. Later on, there will be more characters, like Robin, the Joker, Catwoman, and variants such as Batman in his infamous surfing trunks. And a Batmobile! And a special San Diego Comic Con exclusive Batman that can dance the Batusi!

I’ll shut up now. You just enjoy the pictures.

The likenesses are uncanny! Each comes with a card featuring the character on one side and part of a Batcave diorama on the back. And their stands feature the brightly colored sound effects, such as “Pow!” “Kapow!” and “Awk!”

And for the completists: Here’s the back of the packaging:

Awesome Stuff will be back next Friday … maybe not exactly the same Bat-time, but definitely the same Bat-channel!
