REDWOOD CITY, Calif. — Video game publisher Electronic Arts (EA) said Tuesday that it plans to turn off server operations for several of its titles, ending players’ ability to play the games online with other people.
Servers for “Army of Two,” “Skate,” the Xbox 360 version of “Battlefield 2: Modern Combat” and the PlayStation Portable version of “Need for Speed Undercover” will be shut down on Aug. 11, along with several older sports titles, including entries in EA’s “NCAA Football,” “NCAA Basketball” and “Tiger Woods PGA Tour” franchises.
The “Madden NFL 10” and “NHL 10” servers will be shut down on Oct. 1.
“The decisions to retire older EA games are never easy,” EA said in a statement. “The development teams and operational staff pour their hearts into these games almost as much as the customers playing them and it is hard to see one retired.”
The company said the number of customers wanting to play older games online dwindles as newer titles are released, and it is not financially feasible to operate servers for games played by fewer than one percent of online players.
“We would rather our hard-working engineering and IT staff focus on keeping a positive experience for the other 99 percent of customers playing our more popular games,” the statement continued. “We hope you have gotten many hours of enjoyment out of the games and we appreciate your ongoing patronage.”
