Shamelessly borrowed from the Destructoid site
Have you ever seen a girl – let alone anyone – play video games in this position? This chick looks like a puppy waiting to get a belly scratch.
Anyway, Destructoid’s Tiff has posted this rather good essay (or whatever you want to call it) about the media portrayal of girls who identify themselves as “girl gamers” – meaning, chicks that say they’re chicks in order to separate themselves from other gamers, ie. dudes.
As she points out, “Galleries of E3 booth babes, ‘hot…naked…and blue’ Cortana cosplays, and any number of chicks with joysticks establish a visual narrative for gaming women that heightens gender alienation while simultaneously muffling the significance of the woman gamer’s voice. …the only surface-level ‘heroes’ or ‘icons’ of the female gaming community are the beautifully unattainable likes of [Olivia] Munn or [Morgan] Webb, regarded first and foremost in this industry for their looks.”
There’s a bunch of pictures of half-dressed girls doing strange things to Xbox 360 controllers as illustrations. Fortunately, they don’t seem to ever have photos of guys doing that, which is a good thing. I would vomit.
Here’s another line from the post, as incentive to read it: “I play . You play. We all play, with or without va-jay-jays.” How can you resist?
