The video game industry has been obsessed with World War II for a long time. The reasons are simple and obvious, but one of them is also a bit lazy: Nazis make superb enemies. They aren’t just bad, they’re evil incarnate – and nobody sane is going to argue against that point. As such, gamers have been combating digital Nazis since they appeared in 1981’s Castle Wolfenstein.

Now, I’ve never really been curious about when this was going to end, but it hit me while playing War Front: Turning Point from German developer CDV that this might be the first game that has the Allies both combating Germans and later teaming up with them to fight Soviet aggression.

War Front is a Real Time Strategy (RTS) game that takes place during an alternate World War II that’s something of a cross between Saving Private Ryan and a Phil Dick novel. While there are traditional WWII units like Sherman tanks and Thompson-toting GIs, there are also mechanized battle suits (referred to as Exoskeletons), shield generators and ice weapons.
