I just want to get one thing out before I talk about Rockstar’s PSP version of The Warriors: the remake of the 1979 film is going to bite â hard. I donât care if Tony Scott, an at least competent director, is at the helm.
Theyâre taking the gangs out of New York, which is heresy, and theyâre doing away with the bat-wielding Baseball Furies. Enough!
Hollywood, please stop destroying all that is sacred on celluloid.
Thankfully, Rockstarâs transition of Warriors from PS2 to PSP is nearly flawless. And transition is really what weâre talking about here â âportâ sounds too negative. What Rockstarâs done is to take all of the action, music, character models, voice-overs and minigames from the PSPâs big brother and cram it onto a tidy $20 UMD disc. The Double Dragon-style Armies Of The Night is there too, and itâs unlocked from the beginning.
By far, the biggest improvement over the PS2 version is the cooperative play. Rather than sharing one TV screen with a pal, you can take advantage of the PSPâs built-in WiFi for multiplayer.
Graphically, the PSP version looks good. Itâs certainly gritty, if a tad dark in spots, but the characters always stand out. As far as the sound goes, itâs spot on.
My only complaint has to do with the controls. Movement with the analog stick seems pretty touchy.
All in all, the PSP version of The Warriors is damn fine and itâs definitely a title you should look for when itâs released February 12th.
