The iPhone XS and XS Max are the best phones Apple has ever made — but not worth an upgrade from last year’s model, a consensus of reviews out Tuesday contended.

The new phones, due in stores on Friday — starting at $999 and $1,099 for the XS and XS Max, respectively — feature OLED screens, Apple’s sharpest yet, and best-ever cameras, most reviewers found, but the incremental improvements won’t be felt by anyone with last year’s iPhone X.

The XS Max’s 6.5-inch OLED screen drew raves from The Wall Street Journal’s Joanna Stern, though she noted that it might be too much for those with smaller hands.

“Taking photos, watching videos, FaceTiming, Fortniting, even writing emails felt more immersive on the big phone,” she writes.

The Verge’s Nilay Patel likewise noted that the XS Max’s screen doesn’t take full advantage of its increased display area by showing more information, noting that it simply increases the size of everything onscreen.

“Apps like Slack, Gmail, and Twitter show you the exact same amount of information as the smaller XS,” he said, adding: “I just wish I had the option to up the information density on the XS Max just a little.”

Even with noticeable display tweaks and camera upgrade — it can now adjust the background blur after taking a portrait photo — reviewers told early adapters to save their money if they owned a nearly as good iPhone X.

“If price is a concern to you, then you really should wait and see what the iPhone XR is like,” CNBC’s Todd Haselton said. “But if you have an iPhone X, you don’t need these new phones.”
