A Kentucky man shot and killed his girlfriend and her mother in an “ambush-type” attack following a family court hearing — and later tried to kill himself after leading cops in a wild chase, officials said.
Elizabethtown Police Chief Jeremy Thompson said Christopher Elder, 46, opened fire on the victims — later identified as Erica Riley, 37, and her mother, Janet, 71 — in the parking lot of the Hardin County Justice Center around 9 a.m. Monday morning.
The suspect’s girlfriend, Erica Riley, died at the scene, while the elder Riley was rushed to the hospital in critical condition but later died.

The gunman shot three people including his romantic partner outside Hardin County Justice Center. Google MapsElder also shot an unidentified adult male relative of the victims, who was brought to the hospital and is in stable condition, police said.
After fleeing the scene by car, Elder was chased by several law enforcement agencies, during which he “pointed a rifle at pursuing officers multiple times.”
He later pulled his vehicle into a church parking lot and continued pointing the rifle at himself and officers, the Hopkinsville Police Department said.
Christian County Sheriff’s Office and HPD negotiators attempted to talk some sense into the deranged man for more than 90 tense minutes before he shot himself in the head.

Elizabethtown Police Chief Jeremy Thompson called the shooting a “domestic-related incident.” WLKY
Elder was dating the victim whom he killed, according to police. WAVE NewsHe was flown to Vanderbilt Hospital in neighboring Tennessee and is in critical condition.
Thompson said Elder had been involved in an emergency protective order hearing involving the victims before the shooting took place.
“This was a domestic-related incident. There was a hearing at the courthouse this morning stemming from previous incidents, and we believe it was isolated to the individuals involved,” Thompson told reporters, saying Elder was “part of that hearing.”
Two of Erica Riley’s children were at the scene of the shooting, but were not injured and are safe with family members, Thompson said.
“It’s terribly tragic because unfortunately the victim lost a life, we have two other people who were shot. Surviving family members are going to be without loved ones,” Thompson said, adding that the horrific act of violence highlights the high-stress environment of family court, where emotions can run dangerously high.
“At family court, there’s always emotion involved when you have cases like this, and we have them daily. It just takes one incident like this to understand how volatile it can be,” he said.
Thompson said he couldn’t reveal the identities or conditions of the victims pending family notification.
Elizabethtown is a city of about 31,000 located 45 miles south of Louisville.
