At least one person was wounded in a shooting at a Michigan church before the gunman was shot dead by a security guard early Sunday morning, according to police and news reports.

The gunfire at CrossPointe Community Church in Wayne, Michigan, erupted shortly after 11 a.m., sending parishioners inside running for shelter, footage posted on X by BNO News shows.

“Everybody to the back,” a woman tells panicked parishioners inside the church. “Please, everybody, come to the back. “They gotta come, c’mon,” she said, as churchgoers screamed and dashed to a back room. “Out, I don’t think is a good idea.”

The shooting came about a half hour into morning services, police said on Facebook.“Upon arrival, officers determined that a security guard for the church shot and killed the suspect,” police said. “One victim was shot in the leg.”

Church Senior Pastor Bobby Kelly told the Detroit News that the man in the truck was a deacon at the church and ran over the armed attacker before he could go inside, where 150 parishioners were attending services.

“He was run over by one of our members who saw this happening when he was coming into church, Kelly said.

The gunman was on his way into the church when another person tried to stop him with their truck – when the shooter opened fire at the vehicle and was shot dead by the church’s security guard, WXYZ-TV News reported, citing a law enforcement source. Wayne police said the incident is under investigation.

Wayne Deputy Police Chief Finley Carter told the Detroit News that the 31-year-old gunman was not a member of the church, and police are still trying to determine his motive.

He was not immediately identified.
