An 11-year-old boy has been arrested for fatally gunning down a married New Hampshire couple, officials said.

Police were called to a home in the Belkap County town of Alton where the bloodshed occurred around 7:30 a.m. Friday, authorities said.

When officers entered the residence, they found Lizette Eckert, 50, dead from a single gunshot wound and her husband, James Eckert, 48, alive but with multiple gunshot wounds.

The critically injured James was rushed to Portsmouth Regional Hospital, where he died late Friday.

Police took the 11-year-old into custody for the shootings around 9:30 a.m. Friday following a search of the area, authorities said.

The relationship between the 11-year-old and the Eckerts was not released by authorities and a motive for the killings was not yet clear.

The child was charged with second-degree murder under the state’s juvenile laws, the New Hampshire Attorney General’s Office said.

The New Hampshire Union Leader reported the Eckerts were church-goers and had three children — two boys and a teenage daughter.

The murders rocked the small town.

“It hits home. You never really think something like that would happen here, but it does,” Alton resident Drew Levasseur, 29, told the Union Leader.

Another resident, Terri Hoyt, told the news outlet: “I don’t think anyone in this town expected an 11-year-old boy to do something like that. We’re all shocked. We’re all sad. We’re all just in awe over the fact that it was here that it happened.”
