A 12-year-old girl was shot dead and a 9-year-old boy was wounded in a Thursday night shooting in the upstate city of Kingston.
The violence took place around 8 p.m. in an apartment on Van Buren Street, where cops responding to reports of gunfire found the girl mortally wounded, Kingston police said on Facebook.
The boy was taken to Mid-Hudson Regional Hospital with a gunshot to the arm. He was listed in stable condition and is expected to recover.
According to the Poughkeepsie Journal, the children were hit when nine shots were fired into a rear apartment in the building.
Ulster County District Attorney David Clegg told the newspaper that police are interviewing witnesses, but no arrests have been made.
“There’s a full-court press going on,” Clegg said.
Police did not release any other details, and it is unknown if the children were related.
Kingston police and New York State Police are investigating the incident.
