It was high tide.
A total of at least 126 pounds of cocaine worth $2 million washed up in the Florida Keys over the weekend in three separate locations, according to officials.
According to the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office, one haul weighing 72 pounds hit the beach in mangroves near a condominium complex in Tavernier.
Deputies said local residents discovered the packages and alerted authorities.
Packages of cocaine washed ashore at three different locations along the Florida Keys. Chief Patrol Agent Walter N. Slo“The large package contained multiple smaller packages tightly packed with black tape,” spokesman Adam Linhardt said. “Its contents field-tested positive for cocaine.”
Two other cocaine wash-ups were discovered in Cudjoe Key in the Lower Keys and Duck Key in the Middle Keys.
The valuable contraband — worth an estimated $2 million on the street — was turned over to the federal border officials.
Data from Customs and Border Protection shows that more than 60,000 pounds of illegal drugs were recovered across the US in June, according to Newsweek.
