An 18-month-old boy in Hong Kong has tested positive for the new coronavirus, making him among the youngest patients to contract the disease, according to a local report.
His parents were previously both confirmed to be infected with COVID-19 after all three returned from London on a Cathay Pacific flight on Feb. 29, the South China Morning Post reported Thursday.
The child was admitted to an area hospital with a runny nose after his father was checked in to the same hospital the day before.
Earlier in February, a Chinese newborn was confirmed to have contracted the virus in Wuhan, the epicenter of the outbreak, the BBC reported. The baby’s mother had tested positive before she gave birth and it is unclear how the disease was transmitted.
Health officials at the World Health Organization and elsewhere have said that children are not as severely impacted by the coronavirus and typically only display mild symptoms.
