Newborn twin girls were found dead inside a garbage bag at a Chicago day care center after cleaning workers followed a trail of blood, police said.

The grisly discovery was made at the Bernice Lavin Early Childhood Education Center, located on the campus of Northwestern Memorial Hospital in the 400 block of East Ontario Street, just before 7 p.m. Thursday.

A janitorial crew was cleaning a first-floor bathroom when they spotted bloodstains leading to a cabinet, according to a police report cited by the Chicago Sun-Times.

Inside, workers found a black trash bag that contained the two infants, police said.

The babies were unresponsive and were rushed to Lurie Children’s Hospital, where they were pronounced dead.

There was no immediate word on the girls’ causes of death.

The infants’ mother, identified only as a 29-year-old woman who works at the day care, was found bleeding in the bathroom about an hour before her children were discovered, according to the report.

The woman was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where she underwent surgery, police said.

A Northwestern Memorial official confirmed to station WLS that the incident — described as an emergency medical situation — involved a day care employee.

The company that manages the day care said in an email to customers Friday that the emergency resulted in the unexpected delivery of twin girls.

As of Friday afternoon, no arrests have been made and no charges have been filed.

Cops remained tight-lipped as they investigated the incident.
