A 28-year-old skydiver plunged to her death in Northern California when she hit a semitruck, then crashed into a highway, officials said.

The woman, whom authorities didn’t identify but said was from Colombia, had joined a group Thursday in Acampo for parachuting from Skydive Lodi Parachute Center, news station KOVR reported.

Onlookers said strong gusts of wind blew her from above the center’s safe landing zone to the traffic on Highway 99.

The parachutist collided with a big rig around 2:15 p.m. before ultimately crashing down on the shoulder of the highway, news station KRCA reported. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

“The way the person was struggling, just struggling against the wind and their body was just moving really, really fast,” Lisa Reyes, whose father and brother witnessed the woman’s struggle on the highway, told KCRA.

The Skydive Lodi Parachute Center has had several fatalities in recent years, including a 62-year-old Colorado woman whose parachute failed to deploy on a jump, according to KCRA.

Between 1999 and 2018, there have been 16 deaths involving people jumping from planes that took off from the parachute center.
