Three Arkansas law enforcement officers who were suspended after a video emerged of them beating a detainee were identified Monday — as state police launched an investigation into the violent arrest.

Crawford County sheriff’s deputies Zack King and Levi White, and Mulberry police officer Thell Riddle were named as the officers involved in Sunday’s ordeal outside a small town convenience store, the sheriff’s office said.

The officers were responding to a report of a man, identified as 27-year-old Randal Worcester, making threats outside the store in Mulberry, northwest of Little Rock, authorities said.

Video shot by a bystander shows one officer punching the suspect with a clenched fist, while another can be seen hitting the man with his knee.

The third officer could be seen pinning the suspect to the ground as the officers took Worcester into custody.

The suspect was hospitalized after his arrest before being released and booked into the Van Buren County jail on multiple charges, including second-degree battery, resisting arrest and making terroristic threats, state police said.

Worcester was released on $15,000 bond on Monday. When asked how he was feeling, he said “all right.”

The law firm representing Worcester’s family said it did not have a comment on the video because it was still trying to gather information.

Arkansas State Police said the agency had been brought in to probe use of force in the arrest at the request of the Crawford County prosecuting attorney and sheriff’s office.

“Upon completion of the investigation, the case file will be submitted to the Crawford County prosecuting attorney who will determine whether the use of force by the law enforcement officers was consistent with Arkansas laws,” the agency said in a statement.

Prosecutors will determine if the body cam footage from the arrest will be released, state police said.

Arkansas Gov. Asa Hutchinson said Monday that the law enforcement response shown in the video was “not consistent” with the training carried out at the Arkansas Law Enforcement Training Academy.

“This is not what our law enforcement community represents. It’s not the proper response,” Hutchinson said.

The three officers are on paid administrative leave amid the use of force probe, according to the sheriff’s office and police department.

“I hold all my employees accountable for their actions and will take appropriate measures in this matter,” Crawford County Sheriff Jimmy Damante said.

Mulberry Police Chief Shannon Gregory added that the community and his department were taking the matter “very seriously.”
