A brave 3-year-old girl is being hailed as a hero for saving her mom’s life by dialing 911 when the woman lost consciousness, according to reports.
Dorothy Craig sprang into action after her mom, Miranda, passed out while doing the dishes Wednesday at their home in Cleveland, Texas, KHOU.com reported.
Miranda, who is narcoleptic and forgot to take her medication, was out cold for nearly 40 minutes after the plucky little girl called 911.
“Liberty County 911. You need police, fire or ambulance?” dispatcher Lela Holley answers, according to a recording of the call.
In the background, Dorothy can be heard yelling, “Mama! Mama!” as her 5-month-old brother cries in the background.
Holley coaxes the little girl into giving her more information.
“Honey, I need you to try and calm down a little bit so I hear and understand you,” she says. “How old are you?”
“Three,” Dorothy replies.
“Is your mom sick or hurt?” Holley asks.
Dorothy answers, “Yes.”
The little girl couldn’t provide an exact address — but sheriff’s deputies tracked the cellphone she was using to County Road 386 in Liberty County. They found Miranda by going door to door.
“The deputies started running up and down County Road 386, talking to people, looking in houses, knocking on doors,” said Capt. Ken DeFoor of the Liberty County Sheriff’s Office. “Everyone and this agency has children or grandchildren … we relate to that. You become their mother and father over the telephone … you literally do.”
Holley was still on the phone with Dorothy when help finally arrived.
“This one was very unique, that it came from a little 3-year-old girl that absolutely saved the day,” DeFoor said.
The proud mother said her quick-thinking daughter has called 911 before.
“When she was really little, I taught her how to call 911,” Miranda told ABC News. “And she’s done it for me twice now … she’s my little hero.”
She added, “I’m extremely proud of her. She’s such a smart little girl and she’s so charismatic.”
