A magnitude 5.2 earthquake struck northeastern Iran near its border with Turkmenistan on Saturday, state Iranian TV reported.

At least 34 people were injured and homes were damaged but there were no fatalities from the quake. It hit an area near Maraveh Tappeh in Golestan Province, according to local media.
The Iranian plateau is located in a very seismically active region of the world and is known for its major catastrophic earthquakes.

Most recently, an earthquake measuring 5.1 on the Richter scale shook the western province of Kermanshah on August 9.

In 2017, an earthquake measuring 7.3 on the Richter scale hit Sarpol-e Zahab in the western province of Kermanshah. More than 600 people died and over 10,000 were injured. Some 90,000 houses were partly or completely damaged by the tremor.
