A 4-year-old girl reportedly died in Texas after doctors mistook her flu symptoms for a cold.
Ashanti Brielle GrinageGofundmeAshanti Brielle Grinage started experiencing cold-like symptoms just four days before a flu-related illness claimed her life Thursday at a Dallas hospital, news station KTSU reported.
Her parents said they brought her to the hospital Jan. 29 when her health deteriorated and she developed a 103-degree fever.
When her fever broke the next day, the hospital sent Ashanti home and recommended over-the-counter medications, according to KTSY.
The following day, however, the tot became lethargic and she was taken back to the emergency room.
“She wasn’t even running a fever at this time,” her dad, Martell Grinage, told KTSU. “We just knew she was very sluggish and she wasn’t eating.”
Doctors determined Ashanti had pneumonia in her lungs and the flu. She died the same day she received her diagnosis.
“When I think about my baby, that tears me down, man. That’s what I was living for,” Grinage told news station KDFU. “I told her I wasn’t gonna let nothin’ bad happen to her. I used to preach that to her.”
The tot’s case was the first pediatric flu-related death of the season in Dallas County.
A GoFundMe page was created to raise money for Ashanti’s funeral expenses.
