A 5-year-old Israeli boy is the sole survivor of a horrific cable car crash in Italy that killed 14 passengers, including his parents and younger brother, officials said Monday.

Eitan Biran was wrapped in the arms of his father, whose grip saved him when the cable car plummeted to the ground on its way to Mottarone mountain in the Alps on Sunday, Metro UK reported

The boy had been riding in the cable car with his parents, Amit Biran, 30, and Tal Peleg-Biran, 26, as well as his 2-year-old brother, Tom Biran, Israel’s Foreign Ministry told the Times of Israel.

Peleg-Biran’s grandparents, Barbaria Cohen, 71, and Yithak Cohen, 81, had also joined them and died at the scene, officials said.

The orphaned boy escaped with broken legs and head and chest wounds, the Times of London reported.

He was airlifted to a hospital in Turin, where he cried out, “Leave me alone, I’m scared,” as doctors attempted to treat him, the newspaper reported.

The Israeli embassy in Rome said it’s working with relatives to send the rest of the family’s bodies home, the outlet reported.

The family had been living in the city of Fabia in northern Italy, where Eitan’s father studied medicine and worked as a security guard in a Jewish school, the outlet reported.

“I know the father well, I spoke to him last Friday. He told me he decided to go for a trip with the children and with the grandparents who came from Israel,” Milo Hatzbani, president of the Milan Jewish community, told Israel’s Army Radio.

The grandparents had come to visit the family from Tel Aviv to escape the deadly conflict last week between Israel and Hamas.

“Yitzhak and Barbara wanted to see the great-grandchildren. Rockets were falling in Israel; they thought, ‘What can happen in Italy?’” the boy’s aunt, Aya Biran, told the outlet.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation, but it appears that a cable on the system broke before the car hit a pylon, Stresa Mayor Marcella Severino said.

“It was a terrible, terrible scene,” she told Italy’s SkyTG24.

Other victims included a doctor who had been on the frontlines of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The physician, Roberta Pistolato, was celebrating her 40th birthday with her boyfriend Angelo Gasparro, 45, Meto UK reported.

In a final message to her sister, she crowed about the resort town of Stresa, on Lake Maggiore.

“We are going up to the cable car — it’s paradise here,” she wrote, the Times of London reported.

An engaged couple, Silvia Malnati 27, and Alessandro Merlo, 29, were also on the doomed cable car.

The couple had taken the trip to celebrate Malnati getting her economics degree, the Times of London reported.

Another passenger was Serena Cosentino, 27, a researcher who had relocated to the area from Rome to study micro-plastics in Lake Maggiore, the newspaper.

She was joined by her Iranian boyfriend, Mohammadreza Shahaisavandi, 23, who was visiting from Rome.

A 9-year-old boy also on the cable car initially escaped the wreck, only to later die at the hospital from his injuries.

Emergency responders described a “hell-like” scene as they tried to save those who remained trapped inside the car, which had tumbled down a steep slope before it struck a pine tree.

“It was like a battlefield, with the bodies of children, women and men spread across the mountain,” firefighter, Cristiano L’Altrella, told he told Italian newspaper Corriere della Ser.

Olimpia Bossi, a prosecutor leading an investigation into the crash, told the newspaper that she was horrified by what she encountered at the scene.

“The thing that struck me more than any other was the hand of a child sticking out of the wreckage of the cabin,” she said.

“Many of us cried and before allowing the removal of the bodies I asked for a minute of silence,” she added.

Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi offered his condolences over the “tragic accident.”

“I express the condolences of the whole Government to the families of the victims, with special thought for the seriously injured children and their families,” he said in a statement.
