A “spunky” 5-year-old girl in Nebraska died of complications from the flu, according to the coroner.

Lily Kershaw, of Silver Creek, was battling the flu when she developed an infection that ultimately killed her, the Columbus Telegram reported. She died Sunday at Columbus Community Hospital.

The young girl was a kindergartner at Twin River Elementary, where she was remembered for always having a “big smile.”

“Lily was a smart, kind, and loving little girl,” the school said, according to the newspaper. “She had a passion for learning and always shared her big smile or a hug with anyone in need of one.”

Family friends took to social media to pay tribute to the child.

“It is so hard to see such a spunky, beautiful, sweet little girl leave this world,” Kris Tyma Hickey wrote on Facebook.

Funeral services will be held Saturday.
