A 14-year-old boy has been arrested in the fatal shooting of a 5-year-old girl in North Carolina, police said.
The young girl, who was identified as Amani Barringer, was shot in the neck around 9:30 p.m. Wednesday at a home in northeast Charlotte, news station WSOC reported.
The wounded girl was brought to a local hospital, where she died from her injuries, police said.
There were two teens, a 14-year-old and a 15-year-old, in the apartment at the time of the incident, authorities said.
Police have not said how the shooting happened, but the 14-year-old boy was arrested on charges of involuntary manslaughter.
Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Maj. Ryan Butler became emotional describing the fatal incident to reporters, the outlet reported.
“This morning, there was a 5-year-old girl who got up and had breakfast and played. And now, that 5-year-old girl is not with us anymore,” he said.
“And I don’t have a good explanation. And I know when I finish with my briefing you all are going to have questions on why and who and what, and what I can tell you is this — that none of that matters in a sense that, regardless of what caused it, there’s a 5-year-old little girl who’s not alive right now.”
