A 70-year-old retired physician, who was found dead in a river last week after being accused of cheating in the Los Angeles Marathon, committed suicide, authorities said Monday.
Frank Meza, who was disqualified last week after video showed he fled the course during his record-setting run, died from multiple blunt force traumatic injuries, the Los Angeles County coroner’s office said.
His death was ruled a suicide.
Officials said he left the course and came back from a different position.
His time of 2 hours, 53 minutes, 10 seconds had been the fastest ever for a man his age.
The runner claimed he only left the course to relieve himself.
On July 4, the morning he went missing, Meza told his wife that he was headed out for a run.
His body was found later that morning in the river near the city’s Cypress Park section.
