A quick-thinking 8-year-old girl in Florida is being hailed as a neighborhood hero for helping to capture a man stealing packages from homes, authorities said.
Carlos Aldolfo Moreno-Marquez, 34, was arrested early Sunday after the girl witnessed a theft and helped get a picture of the suspect’s vehicle before reporting it to deputies, the Lake County Sheriff’s Office tweeted over the weekend.
Police soon caught up with Moreno-Marquez, who later admitted to taking three packages that were delivered to nearby residences, sheriff officials said.
The girl, meanwhile, recalled how she sprang into action with a little assistance from her father.
“I told my mom that I saw the man stealing the box and she called my dad,” the girl, who was not identified, told WOFL. “My dad followed the car and took a picture of the license plate.”
One of the girl’s neighbors said she considered herself lucky to be living next to someone so aware of their surroundings at such a young age.
“’See something, say something’ was really applicable here,” neighbor Jennifer Lutes told the station.
Moreno-Marquez is now facing grand theft charges, WOFL reports.
