An 8-year-old Guatemalan boy died Christmas Day in government custody, immigration authorities said.

The child passed shortly after midnight, U.S. Customs and Border Protection said in a statement.

After the boy was taken into CBD custody, a U.S. Border Patrol agent noticed that he showed “signs of potential illness,” the release said.

On Christmas Eve, the boy and his father were transferred to the Gerald Champion Regional Medical Center in Alamogordo, New Mexico, officials said.

Hospital staff diagnosed him with a cold and fever, gave him antibiotics and Ibuprofen and released him, according to the statement.

The child was returned to the hospital Monday evening with vomiting and died hours later.

It was the second time this month a young child died in immigration detention.
