City taxpayers will have to cough up more than $8 million for the wrongful death of a Rikers Island inmate whose chest pains were ignored by guards.

Bronx jurors awarded the estate of José Santiago the cash after lawyers accused a city correction officer of twice ignoring the prisoner’s pleas over 30 minutes.

Santiago, 25, was being held in jail in October 1996 on charges of attempted murder.
