Nine teenagers who broke out of a Pennsylvania juvenile detention center by overpowering female staffers and crawling under a fence were all recaptured less than 12 hours later and will be charged with escape, state police said Monday.
The teens — between 15 and 17 — fled just after 8 p.m. Sunday from Abraxas Academy in New Morgan, less than 15 miles from where convicted murderer Danelo Cavalcante was apprehended last Wednesday after two weeks on the run.
But Pennsylvania State Police spokesman David Beohm said he figured that the juveniles would be caught “because they’re probably not as resilient as” Cavalcante and lacked his desperation.
Beohm added that the escape from the Academy was “probably” planned but “poorly.”
All nine teens who had escaped from Abraxas Academy, a Pennsylvania juvenile detention center, have been recaptured. WPVI-TVThe underage escapees managed to get out by wresting the keys away from two female staff members during a riot that broke out at the facility Sunday night.
One of the workers suffered minor injuries in the attack, Beohm confirmed.
They got out of the building and went to the recreation yard, where they found a spot to crawl under the fence, Beohm said.
The Abraxas Academy had a riot earlier this summer on July 4. ABRAXAS ACADEMYThe first four fugitives were taken into custody shortly before 6 a.m. after they went to a home and knocked on the door. They turned themselves in because they were “cold” and tired after spending the night on the run, Beohm said.
“They were done, they were tired, they were cold,” Beohm said during a news conference Monday. “They basically gave up.”
The other five were captured after police got a call about a stolen truck and “a sort of pursuit” followed, Beohm said.
Four teens were taken into custody from the stolen vehicle and a fifth, who took off on foot, was caught in a field a short time later.
A perimeter was set up around the academy and law enforcement asked the public to call 911 if they saw someone matching the description of the teens on the run. CBS News PhiladelphiaAll nine escapees were recaptured about 4 miles from the juvenile detention center. At least two of the teens looked “weary and dirty,” Beohm said.
The teens were not identified.
They will all be charged with escape, riot and aggravated and simple assault, and some will also be charged with theft by unlawful taking, according to a news release from the Berks County District Attorney.
The nearby Twin Valley School District had announced that all its schools and offices would be closed, and all after-school and evening activities would be canceled Monday “out of an abundance of caution.”
Abraxas Academy is described as a “multi-service facility” with a “secure” treatment program for delinquent males from the ages of “14 to 18 in 9th grade or above,” according to the facility’s website.
This is the juvenile center’s second riot in less than three months, according to WFMZ.
The previous rampage was reported on July 4 and involved some 50 teens who broke a water pipe, fire alarms and video surveillance equipment.
