A 96-year-old Kentucky man was arrested after he was caught allegedly trying to kill his 90-year-old wife to “end her suffering” from dementia before trying to take his own life, police said.

Seymour Taffler, 96, confessed to his murder-suicide plot when police arrived at his Berea home after a call about a possible domestic violence incident was made Friday.

The couple’s daughter told officers he “snapped on her mother,” Elaine Taffler, WKYT reported.

Cops said Taffler was caught standing over his wife in an attempt to smother her, shocking their daughter when she found the scene at their Diana Drive home.

Taffler allegedly told police he did try to smother Elaine because the two did not have much longer to live. He also claimed that his wife had told him on several occasions that she was ready to die.

While the nonagenarian said he was going to take his own life afterward, police noted that he did not appear to have a plan for how to kill himself.

Officers noted that Elaine Taffler “appeared to be extremely frightened” when they arrived and took her to a hospital to treat her injuries.

Her current condition remains unclear.

Court records indicate that officers were informed of her dementia, adding that the condition appeared to be getting progressively worse.

Neighbors told WKYT that they do believe Taffler was attempting to end his wife’s suffering by smothering her.

He was charged with attempted murder and booked at the Madison County Detention Center.

Taffler posted his $25,000 bail and was released on Tuesday. His arraignment is set for Nov. 14.
