The mother of alleged mail bomber Cesar Sayoc has broken her silence, saying her son has suffered from mental illness “for a long time,” according to a new report.

Madeline Sayoc said she was stunned to learn that her 56-year-old son was accused of sending 15 packages containing pipe bombs to notable Democrats, including Hillary Clinton, former President Barack Obama and former Vice President Joe Biden, ABC News reported.

“While I have not lived with my son for 35 years or even heard from him in over four years, I cannot express how deeply hurt, sad, shocked and confused I am to hear that my son may have caused so many people to be put in fear for their safety,” Madeline Sayoc wrote in a letter to the network. “This is not how I raised him or my children.”

Madeline Sayoc said she learned of her son’s arrest after waking from surgery last week.

She said he has “been ill for a long time” and that his family has tried to get him help to no avail.

“We, in America, have a mental health crisis in this country and need to change laws to allow families to compel and require mental health treatment for those in need of such treatment before their illness worsens to where it is too late,” she said.

Madeline Sayoc warned that the words of President Trump and other politicians may give people “license to violently act out in our country.”

“… Our political leaders, like our President Donald Trump, need to recognize that there are many sick people in this country who take their rhetoric and words of ‘War with the Media’ and ‘War with the Democrats’ to heart,” she wrote.

“… I beg President Trump and others to refrain from talk of War with fellow Americans and remembers, as Senator [John] McCain taught us, that we may politically disagree but we are all patriotic Americans and all we want is a safe country for all Americans.”

Cesar Sayoc was arrested Oct. 26 in Plantation, Florida. Prosecutors said his fingerprints were found on one of the packages he allegedly sent to Rep. Maxine Waters.

He had listed his mother’s home in Aventura, Florida, as his primary residence but had been living out of his white van — kitted out in pro-Trump and anti-media stickers — for some time.

He’ll be extradited to New York to face federal charges.
