Africa will face an “imminent surge” of COVID-19 cases, the head of the World Health Organization told several of the continent’s top leaders.

WHO director-general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus delivered his blunt advisory in a teleconference with the African heads of state.

Ghebreyesus also urged the government officials to free up humanitarian corridors to ease the flow of medical supplies across borders.

Africa has more than 7,700 confirmed COVID-19 cases, with South Africa one of the hardest-hit countries.

The Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention expects cases to rise, with some nations hitting 10,000 cases by the end of April.
