An Air Force pilot was killed Tuesday and another injured after their U-2 spy plane crashed into a hillside in Northern California — and dramatic photos show how the aircraft disintegrated upon impact and sparked a massive, 250-acre grass fire.

The images, published by The Sacramento Bee, show the scorched earth and charred wreckage of the aircraft, which went down in Sutter County shortly after takeoff at 9:05 a.m., according to officials.

The pilots had been coming from Beale Air Force Base and were taking part in a training mission when the incident occurred, the newspaper reports.

They had both ejected from the plane before crashing, officials said.

The condition of the surviving pilot is unknown.
