An Alabama man convicted of raping and murdering his girlfriend’s cousin is hoping his execution will go ahead as planned this week as a self-proclaimed follower of the “an eye for an eye” proverb.

James Osgood, 55, is slated to die by lethal injection Thursday after more than a decade in prison for the 2010 killing of Tracy Lynn Brown, 46, whose throat he slit while viciously raping her.

“I’m a firm believer in — like I said in court — ‘an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth.’ I took a life, so mine was forfeited,” Osgood recently said in an interview from his prison cell.

“I don’t believe in sitting here and wasting everybody’s time and everybody’s money.”

Osgood was sentenced to death in 2014, but later had the sentence thrown out by an appeals court. When he was resentenced, Osgood requested he receive the death penalty again – making him one of the few US death row inmates to ever abandon legal challenges to a death sentence.

“The reason I dropped my appeals is I am guilty of murder,” Osgood said, adding that he didn’t want his victim’s family to continue suffering because of him.

“I knew they were going to come back with death. I didn’t want her family and my family to relive all that, just for the same thing. Why put them through that?” he said. “I would like to say to the victim’s family, I apologize. I’m not going to ask their forgiveness because I know they can’t give it.”

“I regret taking her from them. I regret cutting her life short,” he added. “I regret that I took one of God’s children. And I regret the pain and suffering that I caused, not only for the victim and her family but to mine.”

Brown, a mother to a daughter, was found dead in her home in October 2010 after she failed to show up for work.

Her body was covered in blood and defiled with feces, according to the Montgomery Advisor.

Osgood confessed to the crime, sharing that he and Brown’s cousin and his then-girlfriend, Tonya Vandyke, forced her to have sex with them before slitting her throat.

Vandyke is serving life in prison.

Osgood never provided an explanation for why they committed the horrifying crime.

“I remember seeing the fear in her eyes and seeing her shaking,” Osgood chillingly told investigators during his confession, according to USA Today. “There was a lot of cutting involved but it wasn’t a crime of violence. There was no anger involved. I was scared. She wasn’t dying, so I kept cutting her throat and neck.”

“I told her I was sorry,” he added. “It was nothing against her. She just needed to quit fighting and go.”

Brown’s family has previously voiced support for Osgood’s execution, and some members will be attending it on Thursday.

“He’s deserving of this,” Brown’s stepsister, Trish Jackson, told USA Today.

“I struggled with whether I believe in the death penalty or do not, but I’ve come to the conclusion that it’s God’s will. Proper due process was held and this is all God’s doing.”

Osgood is one of two inmates – including Moises Sandoval Mendoza on Texas’s death row –scheduled to receive their death sentences this week amidst a recent uptick in US executions.
