A California man who broke through the steel ceiling bars in an Indonesian jail to escape last week has been recaptured, officials said Monday.

Christian Beasley, 32, a suspect in narcotics-related crimes who had not yet been sentenced, bolted from the Kerobokan prison — about 6 miles from the main tourist beaches of Kuta, a village in Bali — Dec. 11.

Police caught him Saturday in Lombok, another popular vacation destination, Agence France-Presse reported. He had taken a ferry there, according to the report.

“He tried to change his appearance by cutting off his hair, but we finally caught him on Saturday,” local Chief Detective Made Pramestia told the outlet. “We knew he would not go far because he did not have proper documents and enough money on him.”

Authorities believe Beasley bolted after he used a rope to descend a wall, then managed to get over a perimeter wall in an area being refurbished. It wasn’t clear how he managed to evade detection.

Paul Anthony Hoffman, 57, another American, also escaped the same morning but was quickly recaptured.

Beasley was awaiting sentencing after he was caught in August with 5 grams of hashish, according to the report. He may now face a harsher sentence because of his attempt to flee, authorities said.

Beasley and Hoffman were among several inmates to escape from the overcrowded jail this year.

In June, an Australian, a Bulgarian, an Indian and a Malaysian escaped by tunneling about 13 yards under the prison’s walls. Both the Indian and the Bulgarian were caught — but Shaun Edward Davidson of Australia and Tee Kok King of Malaysia remain at large.

“We will question the relevant officials why there are so many incidents like this, maybe there are some procedures they have ignored,” Bali Police Chief Petrus Reinhard Golose told reporters Monday, according to AFP.
