Two American civilian contractors were among five people shot dead by a Jordanian cop Monday at a US-funded police-training center outside Amman, Jordan’s capital, authorities said.
The attacker also wounded seven people, including two Americans, Jordanian authorities said.
The government did not identify the attacker, but ex-parliamentarian Suleiman Saed said it was Anwar Abu Zaid, a relative.
The suspect’s brother, Fadi Abu Zaid, had no explanation for the deadly spree, saying that Anwar, a police captain, was mentally stable and “not an extremist at all.”
But the shooting came on the 10th anniversary of a series of coordinated bombings that killed 60 people at three hotels in Amman.
In Washington, President Obama said the attacker had been dressed in a military uniform.
“We take this very seriously and will be working closely with the Jordanians to determine exactly what happened,” Obama said.
A US official said the Americans, who worked for Virginia-based security contractor DynCorp International, were part of a State Department police-training program.
