Apple has revamped its MacBook Pro laptops, and the big news is a thin retina display atop the keyboard that replaces the function keys.

The “touch bar” changes, depending on what app is in use — web thumbnails for the Safari browser, and color filters in the photo app, for example.

The new MacBook Pros also have huge trackpads, are a half-pound lighter and, in the case of the 13-inch version, smaller and thinner than the MacBook Air.

Making the latter comparison, Apple marketing chief Phil Schiller suggested the 13-inch MacBook Pro as an alternative to the MacBook Air.

Schiller failed to note, however, that the entry-level, 13-inch MacBook Pro, which doesn’t include the touch bar, will start at $1,499, versus $999 for a MacBook Air.

A touch bar-equipped 13-incher costs $1,799, while the 15-inch Pro will run $2,399. Both will hit stores in two to three weeks.

The Thursday presentation, led by Chief Executive Tim Cook, stoked speculation that the MacBook Air may be discontinued next year.
