Two people are in critical condition and four others suffered non-life threatening gunshot wounds after an unidentified gunman entered an Oakland, Calif. school campus on Wednesday afternoon.

Oakland Police Department Assistant Chief Darren Allison said cops were called to the campus in east Oakland at the King Estates, which is home to four schools, including BayTech Charter School, Rudsdale Newcomer High School and Sojourner Truth Independent Study.

Six adults, all over 18 years old, who have some affiliation with the school were reported shot by the unknown assailant. Officers cleared the Rudsdale Newcomer High School where the victims were found suffering from gunshot wounds.

The shooter or shooters have not been identified and has not been apprehended Wednesday afternoon.

“We are currently in actively looking for at least one shooter although there may be other individuals involved,” Allison said during a press conference on Wednesday. “We have our ceasefire teams as well as our violent crime operations teams active in this moment, following up on leads and looking bring to justice to those responsible for this heinous act. We’re asking for people, community members who may have information about this incident to please contact the Oakland Police Department.”

Two of the shooting victims were rushed to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries and three with non-life threatening injuries. Another victim was treated and released, Allison said.

It appears no students were injured during the shooting and have been reunited with parents, Allison said. Alameda County Sheriffs and California Highway Patrol officers also responded to the scene.

John Sasaki, a spokesman with the Oakland Unified School District, made a plea to the community to come together to stop further violence.

“This has been a rough year in Oakland, but it doesn’t define us,” Sasaki said at the press conference. “It doesn’t find the school district, doesn’t define the city … So please, everybody needs to do everything we can to ensure that our kids are loved and supported. And that anybody who would engage in this realizes that there’s always a better choice to make. This is the wrong choice under any circumstances. So we hope that we can come together as a city and make sure that this is the last. What happened today was wrong. It was very  traumatic. It was devastating to our school community and was devastating to our district.”

Sasaki said the school has “culture keepers” who are usually on site but the district does not have their own designated police department. He added the district does have a “very good, close” relationship with Oakland Police Department.

James Jackson, Chief Executive Officer for Alameda Health System, also provided an update on the victims during a press conference in front of Highland Hospital, a level one trauma center, where three of the victims are being threatened.

Jackson confirmed that two of the victims are in critical but stable condition and the third victim is in stable condition.

“The trauma team here at the Alameda Health System have done an extraordinary job and they continue to … that’s what they do,” Jackson said. “But this is a problem. In 2021 and 2022, we’ve seen almost a doubling of the violent crimes victims that we’re seeing here at our facility. So something has changed. I’m a son of Oakland. I grew up in Oakland. This is not the Oakland that I grew up in. I’m calling on community leaders and myself. We’ve got to do differently. We have to do something better.”
