Touching photos released Wednesday show newborn babies who survived an attack at a maternity ward in the Afghan capital of Kabul.

The infants were moved to the Ataturk Children’s Hospital in the country after surviving the attack at the Kabul hospital where the humanitarian organization Doctors Without Borders runs a maternity clinic on Tuesday.

The newborns are shown wrapped in swaddling blankets and wearing diapers in the photos. In one of the images, three of the newborns share a single bed at the Ataturk Hospital.

Some of the mothers of the pictured babies were killed when a number of gunman clad in police uniforms stormed the maternity ward and began shooting and throwing grenades, Reuters reported.

At least 16 people were slain in Tuesday’s hospital attack, including two newborns and several nurses.

Police forces in the city engaged in an hours-long standoff with the attackers, who were eventually killed in the shootout.

In separate attack on Tuesday, a suicide bomber in Nangarhar province — an ISIS hotbed — targeted the funeral, killing 24 people and wounding 68.
