BALI, Indonesia — A brand-new Boeing 737 airliner with 101 passengers and seven crew members crashed into the Indian Ocean and snapped in two while trying to land on the resort island of Bali.

Forty-five people were taken to hospitals, but none appeared to be seriously hurt, said a spokesman for Bali International Airport.

Rescuers evacuated everyone from the Lion Air jet as it sat in shallow water, a large crack visible in its fuselage.
