A Baltimore man accused of going on a rampage at three liquor stores owned by Asian Americans has been indicted on hate crime charges, prosecutors said.
Daryl Doles, 50, who allegedly bashed two Korean sisters in the head with a cinder block during his hate-filled string of attacks on May 2, was indicted by a grand jury Monday on 22 counts, including four charges of attempted murder and nine hate crimes, prosecutors said.
“This crime shocked the conscience of everyone in Baltimore,” State’s Attorney Marilyn Mosby said. “Today’s indictment shows that hate has no home in our city. We commend the victims for their courage and look forward to delivering justice.”
Prosecutors said Doles, who was initially arrested on assault, destruction of property and weapons charges, was denied entry to one business because he refused to wear a mask.
He then destroyed a $1,000 lottery machine, knocking it to the ground before leaving the store, according to the 12-page indictment.

Doles allegedly returned to Linden Discount Liquors and attacked a security guard with a two-by-four before the store’s owner wrestled away the lumber. The Baltimore man then fled on foot and entered a second Asian American-owned business, 40/40 Liquors, minutes later and knocked down a window display of wine bottles, prosecutors said.
The store’s owner told Doles not to return, prompting him to say “F–k Chinese!” as he walked away, the indictment shows.
Prosecutors said Doles then targeted a third store owned by Asian Americans and used a cinder block to assault Hy-Shin Williams, 67, and her 66-year-old sister, Hye-Kyong Yun, at Wonder Land Liquors.
Doles allegedly bashed both women in the head repeatedly with the cement block, leaving both covered in blood. He was arrested 45 minutes later about six blocks away and told a man who asked him why he assaulted them that they needed to “go back to their country,” the indictment sates.
“That’s what it was about?” a man identified only as Shawn asked Doles, court documents show.
“She shouldn’t have came out,” Doles allegedly continued. “They f–ked your country up, but you still love them. F–k outta here. I won’t eat sh-t out their motherf—ing stores … I’ll order out before I eat that motherf–king food.”
Williams and Yun, who were hospitalized following the attack, have not returned to the store due to continued headaches and dizziness, prosecutors said.
An attorney for Doles — who faces two life sentences plus 65 years if convicted on all charges — said he has battled addiction and mental health issues throughout his life.
She also accused Mosby of seeking more serious charges due to media attention in the case, the Baltimore Sun reported.
“Unfortunately, we have seen that office overcharge cases on a regular basis simply because they want press attention,” attorney Staci Pipkin told the newspaper.
Doles, of northeast Baltimore, remains in custody without bail.
