President Obama paid a personal condolence call Sunday on Vice President Joe Biden, whose oldest son died a day earlier from brain cancer at the age of 46.

Obama and first lady Michelle visited Biden and his wife, Jill, at the US Naval Observatory, the vice president’s official residence, where Biden was mourning the death of his son Beau, Delaware’s former attorney general.

The president and first lady had been scheduled to host a White House reception for Ford’s Theatre on Sunday, but it was canceled out of respect for Biden and his family.

“Michelle and I humbly pray for the good Lord to watch over Beau Biden, and to protect and comfort his family here on Earth,” Obama said in a statement Saturday evening.

No funeral arrangements were immediately available.
