Two bartenders in Texas are facing up to a year in jail after allegedly serving a woman arrested for mowing down two bicyclists, killing one.

Shafay Look, 34, and Jon Ward, 56, have been arrested for selling an alcoholic beverage to Gerilyn Weberlein, who police say left the Island Pier Club in Galveston on June 4 and drove into two bicyclists, killing 23-year-old Marco Beltran and injuring another, KTRK reports.

Less than 15 minutes prior to the crash, Weberlein was spotted on surveillance video leaving the bar, where she had been served by Look and Ward despite showing signs of being highly intoxicated, including losing her balance and spilling drinks.

Weberlein, 50, was charged with intoxication assault and intoxication manslaughter after the crash. Her blood alcohol content level was measured at .103 several hours later, according to the station.

“It’s sad,” Beltran’s friend Diego Castellanos told KTRK. “So sad because the people came here to achieve his goals, to make money, meet the culture. He was a really happy person.”

Beltran, whose relatives live in Colombia, had been training in the lifeguard academy for the Galveston Beach Patrol, Chief Peter Davis told KHOU.

Look and Ward, whose bond was set at $7,500 each, could face fines up to $500 and possibly a year in jail if convicted.

Weberlein, who has yet to appear before a jury, is due back in court on Oct. 17 for a status conference, the Houston Chronicle reports.
