Jean-Michel Basquiat’s “Untitled”APA painting by Jean-Michel Basquiat sold for a record $110.5 million at auction at Sotheby’s in Midtown on Thursday night.
The sale of “Untitled” from 1982 — which depicts a human skull in the painter’s signature frenetic strokes and vivid colors — set a record price for an American artist at auction.
The buyer was Japanese billionaire Yusaku Maezawa, 41, who made the winning offer after a 10-minute bidding war at the auction house’s contemporary-art sale.
Maezawa, founder of the Japanese online fashion retailer Zozotown, adds the 72¹/₈-by-68¹/₈-inch piece to his growing collection, which includes a Picasso he bought for $22.3 million.
He had purchased another Basquiat last year for $57.3 million — setting the previous record price at auction for the artist.
The collector said he plans to display Thursday’s acquisition at his planned art museum in Chiba, Japan.
Basquiat, a Brooklyn-born street artist, rose from the graffiti world to become a darling of pop-art producer Andy Warhol.
He died of a drug overdose in 1988 at age 27.
