Now that a new pope has been chosen, the next big decision to be made is: Who will build the new Popemobile?

The unique, hump-backed, bulletproof vehicle that has been a staple of papal transportation since the 1981 attempted assassination of John Paul II is the subject of intense interest among car manufacturers.

And nowhere is the competition more intense than in Pope Benedict XVI’s home country of Germany, where the suitors include Volkswagen, BMW and current Popemobile builder Mercedes-Benz.

Volkswagen is sponsoring World Youth Day in Cologne in August, and that’s the site of the new pope’s first planned trip abroad.

A BMW spokesperson, meanwhile, told a German newspaper that the firm would be “pleased if the pope were to choose one of our armored limousines.”
