Shocking images show the destruction of the monstrous tornadoes that ripped through five states in the middle of the US, killing dozens of people.

The satellite images taken Saturday after the deadly twister show buildings completely leveled in Mayfield, a city of about 10,000 in western Kentucky.

Debris from damaged buildings and downed trees littered the ground, while twisted metal sheeting and wrecked vehicles lined the streets.

Other images show windows and roofs blown off buildings that were still standing.

Satellite images also capture the rubble from the destroyed candle factory, where 110 people were working overnight Friday when the storm tore through the region.

Kentucky State Trooper Sarah Burgess said rescue crews were using heavy equipment to move rubble. Coroners had also been called to the scene to remove bodies, though she didn’t have an official count of how many workers died in the tornado.

Photos from Monette, Arkansas, show a nursing home that collapsed when it was struck by the tornado.

Craighead County Judge Marvin Day said that one person died and 20 people were trapped inside.

Arkansas Gov. Asa Hutchinson toured the wreckage of the nursing home on Saturday.

“Probably the most remarkable thing is that there’s not a greater loss of life,” Hutchinson said. “It is catastrophic. It’s a total destruction.”

Meteorologists haven’t determined whether the storm involved a single tornado or multiple tornadoes.

The death toll across five states has reached 36 so far, including six people in Illinois, four in Tennessee, two in Arkansas and two in Missouri.
