Belize authorities investigating the murders of a Virginia cardiologist and his tour guide are on the hunt for a 23-year-old suspect with a long rap sheet.

Christian Espat is wanted for questioning in connection with the fatal shooting of the guide, Mario Graniel, and doctor, Gary Swank, in the San Pedro Town lagoon, Breaking Belize News reported.

Graniel and Swank, both 53, were gunned down around 10 a.m. Sunday while on a fly-fishing expedition.

Investigators believe the guide was the intended target and the prominent cardiologist was “collateral damage,” Belize Live News reported.

Espat, who is from San Pedro Town, has a criminal history that involves the 2018 murder of an American expat.

He and three other men reportedly broke into Cliff Kirk’s property in an armed robbery. Kirk was shot and brought to a hospital, where he died from his injuries, according to Breaking Belize News.

Police released a photo of Espat on Thursday as they announced a primary suspect had been detained in the case. The female suspect, who hasn’t been identified, reportedly had close ties to the slain tour guide.

Police said Graniel’s home in Boca del Rio had been shot at Friday before the double murder.
